2009 Brings Missed Opportunity to T-Mobile Dash
I’m really scratching my head over the “new” T-Mobile Dash. Maybe it’s because my Dash gave me one of the best Windows Mobile experience in a telephone back in the day. Sure, for some it could not be compared to the newer HTC offerings such as HD-touch and Touch Diamond, but Palm had a winner in the Dash from where I stand. The device was thin, well-designed with a usable keyboard, and was rock solid, especially after they saw an update to Windows Mobile 6.
So why I am bewildered and confused now that T-Mobile has a completely new Dash available for 99 U.S. dollars after rebate and commitment? Let me exhausted and the new features you’ll see why: the small silver plate from the front is gone, so the handset is now all black. I quote a famous comic line: “That’s all, folks!” OK, it has Windows Mobile 6 1 instead of Windows Mobile 6, but all that do make Dash angry current owners, if they can not get the update, or do not know about the XDA-Developers site.
It would not be too much of a stretch for some under-the-hood improvements such as a camera sensor bump or the like, but there is an update missing, which were not ignored: 3G. The Achille’s Heel of my old Dash is no 3G support: You get Wi-Fi and EDGE. After years of playing the 3G laggards, T-Mobile finally got their 1700MHz network going in 2008. You’d think that in 2009, they would leverage it a little by more 3G phones to their stable of devices. With such a large device in the Dash, it looks like the first missed opportunity for T-Mo in 2009.
